Aztec and Mayan Cultures

The first date I am including on this timeline is 1325.  This is when the Aztecs founded their capital of Tenochtitlan in the general area that is now Mexico city.  During this time period, both the Aztec and the Mayan civilizations were flourishing in what is now Mexico.  However, even before the Maya and the Aztec civilizations the Olmec civilization thrived in Mexico.  The Olmecs were one of the earliest Mezoamerican civilizations.

Spanish Conquest

In 1440 Montezuma became the leader of the Aztecs and the culture was flourishing.  Until 1519, when Hernan Cortez arrived in Mexico.  In 1520, he arrived in Tenochtitlan, killed Montezuma II and claimed the land of Mexico for Spain.

Mexican Independence from Spain

In 1810, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla gave the cry for independence from Spain (El Grito de Dolores).  But it took over 10 years for Mexico to gain independence in 1821.

Other Major Struggles in Mexico’s History

In 1835, Mexico fought the Texas Revolution.  This is the time frame of the Battle of the Alamo.

Later in 1846-1848 was the Mexican-American war when the United States and Mexico fought over the land in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Texas.

In 1861, The French decided to invade Mexico (this is the time period of the Batalla de Puebla which is celebrated on Cinco de Mayo).  France ruled Mexico until 1867 when Benito Juarez expelled them.

In 1910, Pancho Villa, Venustiano Carranza, and Emiliano Zapata among others fought the Mexican Revolution to help determine the way the government would continue.  The current Mexican constitution was adopted in 1917.

Modern Mexico

Since then, the government has been questioned, but not to the point of armed conflict.  As always in politics there are many disagreements, but few have resulted in conflicts.  The next major incident in Mexico’s history is the 1985 earthquake that shook Mexico City.  It killed tens of thousands of people and destroyed much of the capital.
